about

As a game player, I love gamepass, and Microsoft gave us Halo (a game about which I have written many songs)

As a game developer, a walled ecosystem like gamepass reaching dominance, and run by a platform who is also a publisher is terrifying. Great for people who can get on the service, but as they buy more and more companies - there will be less reason for them to give anyone external good deals.

Imagine if Sony had exclusive ownership of the only record shop in the world. If you want to sell your records, you have to go to them, and they will offer you pretty much any deal they want and you will take it. I have been talking about this industry transition for years...its terrifying. Going back to music, how come I personally stream maybe 50 songs a month (I know I should be ashamed) so why does my 10 dollars only result in lass than 0.1 cents for a royalty? Each artist I listen to should get $10/50plays @ 70% (is apple take a 30% cut) that's $0.14 per play.

In the future, I will have more players for my games (if I am lucky enough to get onto a subscription service), but the dominant platform will take all the money. Gamepass has 25 million subscribers, each paying 10 - 20 dollars a month. They get 25 million dollars a month at minimum, a figure that is growing every day. However, they pay a pre-negotiated figure to developers for their content, which usually feels like a good deal for the developer. But as the gamepass service grows, the deals probably wont get any bigger with it. And Microsoft (or Apple etc) will make the lions share of the revenue, leaving developers in "survival mode".

Why would Microsoft want my games anyway? when they are about to become the biggest videogame IP owner on the planet.
